Mr Cameron McKean
In the constantly shifting world of global payments and financial technology, few careers illustrate long-term vision and resilience as clearly as that of Australian entrepreneur Cameron McKean. From leaving high school early in Sydney to leading multinational ventures in payments and billing, his story is one of persistence, innovation, and a deep understanding of how money really moves in the modern economy.
Rather than following a traditional academic path, Cameron chose to build his own. With a strong grounding in information technology, he moved quickly into the commercial world, applying technical skills to real business problems. Over the next decades, he built a track record across marketing, telecommunications, payments, billing systems, and software development, always with a focus on recurring revenue and mission-critical infrastructure for businesses.
A major milestone in his journey was the founding of TeleMates, an Australian telephone and internet services company. Over 15 years under Cameron’s leadership, TeleMates evolved into a significant player in the telecom and billing space, serving customers nationwide and pioneering flexible, customer-focused billing solutions. The company’s eventual acquisition by the Buroserv Group validated both the strength of the business and Cameron’s ability to build and exit a scalable, profitable enterprise.
Cameron’s entrepreneurial drive did not stop there. He went on to build and manage one of the largest B2B direct marketing databases of Australian and New Zealand businesses, giving him a unique, data-driven perspective on SME behaviour, customer acquisition, and the realities of business growth across the region. This asset further reinforced his reputation as a strategist who understands the full lifecycle of customer engagement— from first contact to ongoing billing and payment relationships.
Long before the word “fintech” became fashionable, Cameron was already designing payment and billing systems, starting as early as 1999. He is the founder of HowToPay.com, a platform that has provided services to millions of customers and processed more than AUD $1.9 billion in transactions. Through HowToPay and related projects, Cameron has consistently focused on alternative payments, cross-border billing, and practical solutions for high-risk and underserved industries—decades ahead of many newer entrants in the space.
In parallel with his entrepreneurial ventures, Cameron has served as a trusted advisor in cybersecurity and payments, offering freelance consulting in Internet and Payment Security, particularly PCI Compliance. His clients have included multinational corporations and government organisations, who rely on his expertise to navigate complex regulatory, security, and operational challenges in digital payments. His work sits at the intersection of compliance, technology, and commercial reality.
Today, Cameron McKean is recognised not just as a serial entrepreneur, but as a leader in fintech, payments, and billing—someone who understands that the real foundation of digital finance is not just banking, but the infrastructure that powers invoicing, billing, and transaction flows for businesses every day. His journey from high school dropout to global fintech operator underscores a simple truth: expertise, persistence, and a clear vision can build industries, not just companies.
